Because in our culture (unfortunately, in my opinion) women are made to be defenseless and vulnerable at all times.
There are a lot of great video games which have strong leading women (Tomb Raider, Mass Effect, TWD and TLoU to name a few) Still, when a woman comes under attack, the reaction of many men is to rush to her defense, like she isn't capable of dealing with it, the "white knights" or social justice warrior as you call them. Nobody wants to be viewed as a sexist asshole (or racist for that matter) and attacking (verbally) a women, no matter how right or wrong you are, will always land you on that spot, guaranteed.
Feminists are usually hypocrites anyways.
