I spent a lot of time just looking for the last carpenter (the things that didn't spawn). It was a long time ago though and no matter what I did, no carpenter. I went into every prison cell, I thought. Maybe I was just crap at the game. But I lost interest because I couldn't progress.

It's probably the latter. Even on my 10th or so playthrough of the game I have trouble finding the last carpenter.
