Sure but it seems they had access to his email account.. then its easy to get into ftp and the wp-config.php file with the salt..

ofcourse there was a administrator login on that site... surely it was a cms site.. who still has time to hardcode stuff like news and a blog?
for example http://www.capybaragames.com/ .. do you see a login? no? but that doesn't mean there isn't one:
