You're not wrong: those publications played for the narrative. I play games for the gameplay which is the strength of video games as opposed to films. TLoU would have made a better film.

I hate people trying to spread this rumor about TLoU.  TLoU is a gameplay game.  It has cinematic moments in between fairly large areas with groups of enemies that you can tackle with a variety of strategies.  Play on survivor or grounded then tell me the game doesn't have gameplay.  The story of survival and hopelessness feeds into the gameplay where you have to scrounge around and improvise in the middle of firefights.  It's a rush choking someone out PRAYING their friend won't walk around the corner in time to see you because you only have 3 bullets left.  Or trying to avoid the runners eyes as their clicker friends are waiting to bite your throat out if you make a peep.

TLoU received those great scores because it had GREAT gameplay to compliment the great story.  It appealed to old and new school gamers.  Not everyone is going to love it and that's fine but don't throw out totally unjustified criticism.  Didn't like the story?  Fine.  Didn't like the gameplay mechanics?  Fine.  Don't say it was just a film.  That MIGHT be a legitimate criticism for Beyond 2 Souls or Alan Wake or Heavy Rain (though I don't think so because your actions still effect the outcome and the control you do gets you immersed like a movie never would) but not for TLoU.
