Sony can get sales numbers from the retailers they ship to. Because of electronic registers and whatnot, every retailer knows precisely how many units of PS4s they have sold.

1. It's not a crime at all.

2. It's PR speak, and they did so without quoting where the data came from.

3. It's happens all the time, and I was proven right a few months ago with watch_dogs and MK8.

I will say that if the perfect world where Sony gets perfect data from every retailer, then why they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to access NPD, Chart Track, and Japanese sales data?


Lying about sales numbers isn't illegal? It is where I live. Even if it isn't, Sony wouldn't be stupid enough to tell a straight up lie on the stage. What PR speak did he use? He specified "and just to be clear, that is 10 million sold through to consumers."

 

Regardless of all that, official sales figures are seen as the most reliable.
