Daedalic are doing a Blackguards 2 with bigger and blowy-up-ier battle maps

Comment

It’s been less than a year since I was in an underground bar in Hamburg watching Germans swig their drinks and throw their axes in honour of the just-finished Blackguards. But it seems Whispered World types Daedalic enjoy making classic RPGs so much that they’ve barrelled right ahead into their second.

Blackguards 2 will bolt new bits to Daedalic's engine and tinker with its turn-based combat.

Star Wars: The Old Republic subscribers are about to get player housing

Comment

BioWare’s first MMO will never be the game Galaxies fans want it to be. And that’s fine - Star Wars: The Old Republic is quite good in its own right. But it can learn lessons from its predecessor, and ensure players are inhabiting its world rather than just passing through.

That’s what next week’s Galactic Strongholds expansion is all about: habitation. Or as BioWare put it, "customizable bastions of personal luxury".

Mechs join humans, zombies and demons in Hazard Ops

Comment

Delightfully silly multiplayer shooter Hazard Ops will soon see mechs thrown into the war between humans, zombies and demons. The War of the Machines update introduces a new PvP mode, where little humans sitting inside giant machines can fight other giant machines.

These giant machines also have jetpacks.

The Evil Within will get three bits of DLC, so it's getting a season pass too

Comments4

The Evil Within is going to throw a lot of horrors at you, from spider women and zombies to invulnerable monsters you have to run away from - a lot easier to do when you aren’t crippled by an inability to run very far.

Depending on how you feel about splashing out on DLC for an unreleased game, it’s got one more horror for you waiting in the wings: a season pass.

Play Unreal Tournament for free without buying Unreal Engine 4

Comment

Unreal Tournament will be free. It’s already free, in fact, but only if you’ve got the Unreal engine 4. If you’re not developing a game, there’s a good chance you don’t. Not to worry! Kind soul and Unreal forum member raxxy is gathering builds created by the Unreal Tournament team and throwing them out into the aether, for any Tom, Dick or murderous space soldier to download.

And while Epic’s not involved, they’ve given the okay for raxxy to continue doing this. You can snatch up the latest build here, and expect lots of updates, as the game continues to be developed.

Company of Heroes 2 is getting some solo campaign love with Ardennes Assault

Comment

Company of Heroes’ multiplayer standalone expansion, Western Front Armies, was grand. It was an injection of life into the game, with two new factions that weren’t just reskins or a few new units, but armies with completely new mechanics with refreshing strategic philosophies. In my Western Front Armies review I said it was Company of Heroes 2 at its best.

The lack of a single-player campaign wasn’t a problem, but Relic’s decided to make one anyway, which is certainly nice if you don’t really fancy competing against other players. Ardennes Assault brings back the US Forces and Oberkommando West from Western Front Armies, and throws them against each other in 18 missions inspired by the Battle of the Bulge.
