Sony started spreading out releases really well during the second half of the PS3's life-cycle. It became a big reason why the PS3 dominated most of the year, with the 360 offering up real competition only during the fall and holiday seasons. Sony released several big games during January and February, like the God of War games, which gave them a real edge during periods when content was light.

No doubt that is the plan going into this generation, though delays have been a bit of a problem. Developing for a console that isn't even out yet is no easy task, however, so delays at this time are kind of par for the course.
