I leave my PS3 on for 2 weeks during the holidays since I'm either playing or folding, no problems.

It uses the combined idle computing power of participating PS3 and PC's to perform calculations which simulate the folding of proteins. They believe that certain deseases such as cancer and alzheimer's may be caused by improper folding of proteins. By running simulations, they can see where things might go wrong and that might lead to a cure. That's just my take on it, more info is available on their site.
