I am not sure a DS version would sell any better than for example Assassin's Creed sells for the DS (also a very visual game). I think the problem isn't install base, it's technical. It would probably turn into a completely different experience Moster Hunter fans are used to.

The best selling DS games are all rather simple, party games, semi-3D games like Mario, puzzle games, etc.

Nintendo Dogs, Pokemon, Tetris, BrainAge, etc are all very different less demanding style games. For PSP games like God of War, Need of Speed, Grand Theft Auto, etc style games IMO the DS just isn't powerful enough and the display not of high enough quality to translate the experience well enough. I own a DS and would never consider such demanding home console like games for the system.
