It really depends on the implementation.  I like the implementation in Tomb Raider as it encourages exploration.  It's very tied to the game itself.

Other games, especially on Xbox 360 just give points for anything.  You started the game, Achievement!  On the other extreme would be The Last Of Us that doesn't give a trophy for hours, even after the difficulty ramps up.  Also the platinum trophies are often so much effort that they're not worth it (don't know wether to admire completionists or console them for no life).  I don't like either of those cases much.

 I ended up just turned them off on mine cos nothing kills the mood like the icon popping up after beating a boss or an important story point.
