It did happen, but they are japanese only (in terms of godlike Success). Watch out for Youkai Watch 2, its at 2mil and its practically guaranteed  to sell 3mil by years end if these legs continue!

Mnster Hunter also in a way was very successful... Oh yeah Animal Crossing on HH is amazing (japan of course)

Those are nowhere close, the first generation pokemon games sold over 30 million with 10 million in Japan alone, it also branched out into an anime, theatrical releases, toyline, card game, that were all huge successes around the world. Nearly 20 years later, the games are still selling around 15 million with each new generation and the anime/toys/cards are still around.

Youkai Watch/Monster Hunter/Animal Crossing have never been and never will be as big as Pokemon was at its peak.
