BlowoverKing said: Question for those of you who know something about Digimon. I've been a big fan of Pokemon ever since it first came out when I was 4 years old but have never touched a Digimon game, trading card, or watched any of the shows. So my question is how similar to Pokemon is it? At least as far as the games are concerned? Do you get to capture "wild" Digimon? Do you get to level them up, have them learn new moves, and have them evolve? Are there type advantages/disadvantages as well? I'm really interested in Cyber Sleuth because the idea of having a Pokemon style game on my Vita is too good to pass up. Either way if it comes stateside I plan on picking it up but would really like to know how similar it is to Pokemon |
The Show is very different than Pokemon. You see Pokemon surrounds around one central character, Ash. Digimon has always been about a team of 3-5 kids. Pokemon is a harmless fun adventure, while Digimon is usually an End of the World Plot. You do not capture Digimon. A Digimon is usually assigned to a random "Digi-Destined", one that suits their personality. The stronger the trainer's bond with his Digimon the stronger they become.
Digimon usually takes place in an alternate dimension known as the Digital World. Later seasons had the DigiWorld bleed into the real one so Digimon could appear anywhere.
Also, Where Pokemon have very strict evolutionary trees Digimon offers countless paths, depending on how you train your Digimon. There is a Hierarchy of stages. In Training(baby form), Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, then Mega. There are also some one off transformations like Matrix Evolution, the ability to merge 2 Digimon, or trainer merging with Digimon, but for keeping this simple we will leave that out.
Pikachu> Raichu or Charmander>Charmeleon>Charizard
those are static Evolutions. But in Digimon....
Augumon>Greymon or Augumon>Dark WarGreymon OR Guilmon>Greymon.
In this sense each Digmon has an expansive list of possible evolutions and Battle Effeciency types. Take note that Digi-Evolutions are not permanant and only last for the battle. You usually get to see them transform in all their glory each episode. Digimon has similar Power/Transforative Depth as something like Power Rangers, Its methods are constantly evolving. Pokemon relatively keeps the same formula but just adds new territories and new pokemon.
Digimon usually only have 1-2 moves specific to their current state, yet the show will sometimes throw a curve ball at you and reveal some Deus Ex Machina type stuff.
In Training and Rookie stages, Digimon tend to be small and cute, then in Champion + they take on monsterous traits OR become Humanistic. Last but not least..........Digimon can all speak.
The Games: Pokemon games have been consistant over the years but Digimon games are varied and different. There have been fighter types, platforming types, as well as RPG types. For comparison, the Digimon World 3 is most similar to Pokemon*insert color here*.You take the role of some small kid with Goggles(a running gag that all leads have goggles) and choose 3 Digimon you would like. They come in predefined packs, all in rookie form. After that you take off into the Digital World to play(as the Digital World is percieved as a video game). While playing you will discover some nefarious plot. You can train your 3 digimon in multiple ways to raise stats and get different evolutions for each. As you progress through the world you can unlock some of the other pack(and hidden) digimon to train.
