I was reaally suspicious when VGC all of a sudden had the PS3 and 360 tied after adjusting its numbers a while back. It was too arbitrary and so obvious that VGC had no idea how much the PS3 and 360 sold. However, after seeing this, we can safely conclude that the PS3 is in 2nd place and not just barely.

I don't think we can draw that conclusion.  The shipped numbers are a little hazy for both PS3 & 360 now but it's fairly safe to say that on the numbers reported by MS & Sony both consoles are around 84-85m.

My guess is that PS3 is towards the top end of that range and 360 towards the bottom but we can be fairly certain that the difference is still <1m units.

Unless you don't believe the financials from one or other company we can't get away from the overall numbers being very similar.

It does beg the question - where are the 360 sales coming from?

You do have a point. It's pretty annoying that both Sony and MS are now combining shipments of their current and previous gen systems. I don't believe that MS has 2 million 260's still on shelves. That would just be ridiculous. However, after their 3 million sold through X1's announcement that was immediately followed by their 3.9 million shipped X1's announcement, I get the impression that MS is not hesistant to overstuff the channels with either console.
