I haven't finished 3D, so I don't know what the end game is for Dream Eaters and their overall importance, but the Unversed are definitely not "pointless". They are the minions of Xehanort that allowed him to initiate his plans. In a way, they're the "original enemies". Heatless are just what happens when you lose your heart, and Nobodies are the bodies left over when your heart is lost.
With Xehanort coming back, the Unversed should definitely be pivotal in terms of how the story is approached. But from the [only] trailer we've seen, we at least know Heartless will be involved
