I wouldn't say its impossible for Xbox One to make a similar move. The consoles aren't even a year old yet.

The Sega Genesis was available first. For inexplicable reasons, Nintendo took their sweet time with the debut of the SNES.

Of course, a better comparison would have been the XB360, which started out with a substantial lead from an extra year on the market and outsold the PS3 earlier on in the product cycle, only to be eventually outsold by the PS3. 

Another good example is that the Wii was always king of NA until the very end of the gen, where Xbox 360 finally overtook it. Years beforehand, people would have laughed at anyone who claimed that would happen.
