While the vita is a great handheld, I'm sure that it was not worth the 700 dollars you used up on it. I'm sure the original PSP has a ton of JRPG's and Sony exclusives to keep you occupied for a much longer time.

.. but the Vita is PSP compatible (digital), so he can play both on Vita?

I was meaning that the psp would have been much cheaper and seeing how he usually  plays ps1 games and sony exclusive the psp would have been a better choice if only for the huge amount of sony exclusives.

PS1 games are much better on the Vita than on the PSP.

On PSP you stretched the 320x240 to 363x272 (which looked very blurry) or to 480x272 (which looked even worse with the wrong aspect) or you used only a fraction of the screen.

Scaling on the Vita from 320x240 to 726x544 looks much sharper. With pitch-to-zoom you can finetune the display area without steps. The PS1 game has PAL bars at the top and bottom? Just zoom a bit further in. And the Vita has a second stick for PS1 games supporting analog controls, you can also emulate L2 + L3 + R2 + R3 with the touchscreen or touchpad.
