So why are people OK with ads on the 360/One dashboard?

Principle. Like highwayuni said above, you've paid a lot for this device and their service already and you are still getting advertised to. Usually if you don't pay for something you expect to get advertised to, if you pay for it (one off or subscription) you don't. Even you listed a reason why it's intrusive.

But as a gold member I also get special discounts. Why shouldn't they show me the discounts?
