Right, but why would you try to keep something afloat if it isn't successful? Practice in futility?

That's what I'm saying though. Nintendo's strategy these days is to concentrate 90% on time-tested classics like Zelda and Mario, while spending the other 10% on new IPs, most of which they put little effort into fleshing out. This results in most of the games being mediocre at best, and not getting many sequels, if any. The few that do stick (Pikmin, Animal Crossing) Nintendo raises and treats just like they do their old IPs, which is good. The others get canned after a crappy sequel or two at most, never to be seen again for the most part.
