So, the majority of the games you listed had the last game in the series come out 5 or more years ago (usually more). The few that survive to now are usually very small titles, many download-only, and most have terrible metacritic scores.

I'll agree there. Nintendo has some great IPs, don't get me wrong. They have built the greatest franchises over decades. It's just in recent years they've been throwing stuff against the wall and seeing if it sticks. It's not a bad strategy at all, we've gotten Animal Crossing and Pikmin out of it. It's just that the vast majority of the game inevitably suck. It's the same with most devs, Nintendo just has a slightly worse percentage in recent years.
