And yet the vast majority will never see a sequel. Not really keeping a franchise afloat if the first game is the only game.

And how many of them have had any sort of sequel in the last few years? A lot of them had a mediocre sequel that ended the franchise. A lot of those franchises haven't seen a new game in 6+ years.
