Chose the third option in poll, because GameCube and N64 didn't do that much better and those weren't called WiiU.

The GC has a huge marketing issue. No one wanted to buy it because they thought it was just for kids. Looked like a lunch box. From a marketing perspective, it doesn't look good in the house.

Either people aren't old enough...or they are creating their own history.  PS2 won that generation before it even started.  It killed the Dreamcast before it (the PS2) even came out.  There were essentially 4 consoles going head to head and Playstation was just coming off an amazing PS1.  And...and this is huge...it had a built in DVD player.  DVD players would cost you $200 alone.  People were still watching VHS in droves.

Granted, the Gamecube looked funny...and the controller seemed awkward...but it wouldn't have mattered.  Sony Playstation brought the masses to gaming that generation...and solidified their presence with the PS2.  This even though the first several years of the PS2's life were plagued with consoles that destroyed people's games.

Look up articles ir videos on gamecube and Nintendos issues with marketing. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Nintendo has been their own worst enemy just like Sega was for almost twenty years now. Nintendo also screwed themselves over with format choice because they were terrified of piracy but at the end of the day it still comes down to Nintendos marketing decisions, games and the consumerrs willingness to buy.
