The DS has more sales potential than home consoles. Usually when people get their home consoles its for the whole family to play (so its kinda like 1 console is used by 4 or more). Portables are a little different, one DS for the little kid and one for the older brother is not that rare (there may even be an exclusive DS for the momma to play Brain Age and Nintendogs). Considering that Japans population is around 120 m (correct me if I am wrong) and that not everyone plays videogames the ratio 4 to 1 doesnt apply really well. I think that is caused by 1) DS drawing in new game players and 2) the DS being a gadget aimed for personal use (like cel phones) not for the whole family. There is also the fact that people consider "upgrading" their DS to DS Lite.That may explain why they are always out of stock.
