The zero theorem 7.5/10
I feel like I have hardly seen half of it yet, so many details in the background. It's a bit overwhelming at first, like he steps right into the middle of a cirque du soleil performance first time he steps outside. Awesome sound work there too, great portrayal of the anxiety to go outside.
Interesting movie with plenty to think about. Not surprising when trying to tackle the meaning of life while trying to proof there is none. All wrapped up in a satirical version of today's society. Kinda like Brazil in that sense. Not as good as Brazil, but Zero theorem will probably be interesting to revisit in a decade or two. I'll be watching it again much sooner, so much to see. Love the giant X of forbidden signs in the park, no old people allowed, no wheelchair guide dogs allowed and other such nonsense.
Great performence from Chistopher Waltz too.
The (Canadian) blu-ray version is a bit underwhelming. Black bars all around with rounded edges. Crap unwieldy dual language menu system, not even english subtitles as an option. The extras were ok, some location and costume info. It really could have used a commentary track though. Picture quality is pretty good anyway, surround sound great.
Update: While the surround sound is nicely active with great sound field design I figured out today why I couldn't get it to sound quite right while fiddling with my amp's settings. The advertised 5.1 DTS-HD MA on the box is a lie. I just tried it in the ps3 and it is lossy 448kbps DD 5.1. (Not even the maximum 640kbps for DD) No wonder no sound program on my Yamaha amp could make the surround channels sound naturally clear. Mongrel media / Metropole film distribution has been on my radar before for a sloppy blu-ray release. Disappointing.
