What happened to some of the 47 Million N64 owners who started migrating towards the xbox (Goldeneye to Halo)? What did the PS2 gamers play before and after they moved to the 360?

Honestly, it's not because the numbers for the twins add up to 160M that they were all PS2 owners.

Another thing, the latest argument for TLOU:R is that many PS4 fans don't own PS3s. If that's true, then it seems like there is a lot more movement than we like to think. Some start gaming, some stop, we really have no idea what happens to owners between gens.

One more point, we know that the PS2 did very well in Japan and in developing countries. Did those people all buy 360s?

Related is the fact that the sales for the twins in the US exceeded by far the sales of the PS2:

PosPlatformNorth AmericaEuropeJapanRest of WorldGlobal
1 PlayStation 2 (PS2) 53.65 55.28 23.18 25.57 157.68
6 PlayStation 3 (PS3) 28.56 32.98 10.05 11.39 82.98
7 Xbox 360 (X360) 47.25 25.23 1.66 8.45 82.59

twins total in US = 76M vs 53.65M for PS2.

Also, the numbers in Japan don't add up to twins = PS2. (11.70M vs 23.18M)

The Nintendo 64 never sold 47 million, It sold 32 million according to Nintendo.

The PS4 userbase is regrowing back to a state in between the PS3 era and the PS4 era with interruption from Microsoft. This means the highest the PS4 can sell this gen is around 100 Million and it wont go further than that. MS halved the third party crowd who don't care about loyalty. Remember, it was Sony who grew the size of the market to where it is today. The Wii crowd is not returning unless another fad occurs with a displosable pleasure console and MS isn't growing the market themselves but rather making their console as close to Sony as possible so they can stop them from growing their marketshare. Microsoft walked out of their first gen with only 24 million consoles sold. Rare wasn't the heart and soul of Nintendo but rather were a great company to own for another crowd, which Nintendo didn't cater to using first party.

I will agree that MS did take from Nintendo as well even though their focus was on Sony. The Gamecube sales dropped by over ten million that gen.

N64: 32.93

Now lets look at the sales of Rare games on the Xbox 360

Kameo: Elements of Power X360 2005 Adventure Microsoft Game Studios 0.27 0.02 0.00 0.03 0.32
Perfect Dark Zero X360 2005 Shooter Microsoft Game Studios 0.65 0.02 0.03 0.06 0.75
1 Viva Pinata X360 2006 Simulation Microsoft Game Studios 0.44 0.94 0.02 0.19 1.59
2 Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise X360 2008 Simulation Microsoft Game Studios 0.15 0.24 0.01 0.05 0.45
3 Viva Pinata: Party Animals X360 2007 Misc Microsoft Game Studios 0.18 0.02 0.00 0.02 0.21
1 Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts X360 2008 Platform Microsoft Game Studios 0.31 0.34 0.00 0.08 0.73

No....Rare fans did not follow Rare to Microsoft. The sales don't add up. The sales reflect the sentiments of the audience and they just were not around my friend. As I said, if there were Rare fans who followed them to MS it was a niche crowd.

The highest selling selling Rare game that MS has ever sold are these two...

1 Kinect Sports X360 2010 Sports Microsoft Game Studios 3.72 1.63 0.03 0.48 5.86
2 Kinect Sports: Season Two X360 2011 Sports Microsoft Game Studios 1.30 0.68 0.02 0.21 2.20

I assure you....this is not the Rare crowd. These were Kinect owners (1/4 of them) who wanted something to play while MS was trying to prove to the world that the Kinect was worth a damn.

Its obvious Microsoft was sitting on a good portion of of Sony's old marketshare. No huge portion went to Nintendo because the third party sales for the Wii are nothing compared to the PS2 generation even though the Wii sold 100 million units; therefore, it wasn't the same crowd.

Sony's first gen

PlayStation (PS) 38.94 36.91 19.36 9.04 104.25
Nintendo 64 (N64) 20.11 6.35 5.54 0.93 32.93
Sega Saturn (SAT) 1.83 1.12 5.80 0.07 8.82

Results/Total : 146 M

Sony's second gen

PlayStation 2 (PS2) 53.65 55.28 23.18 25.57 157.68
Xbox (XB) 15.77 7.17 0.53 1.18 24.65
GameCube (GC) 12.55 4.44 4.04 0.71 21.74

Dreamcast (DC) 3.90 1.91 2.25 0.14 8.20

Total: 212.27M

Generational change: +66.27M

Results:

Sony: +53.43M

Nintendo: -11.19M

Sega: -0.62M

I think we can agree here from the change in results that Microsoft stepped on Nintendo's toes and Sony only grew from there. Sega's marketshare dropped by a little more than half a million according to VGChartz. The overall marketshare expanded because of Sony's grand increase of 53.45 M and Microsofts entrance combined with Nintendos loss and a portion attributed to Halo's sales and we have close enough to Microsofts overall sales for that generation. The closest we can get is an educated guess.

Sony's third gen

PlayStation 3 (PS3) 28.56 32.98 10.05 11.39 82.98
Wii (Wii) 45.24 33.75 12.76 9.28 101.03
Xbox 360 (X360) 47.25 25.23 1.66 8.45 82.59

Total: 266.6

Generational change: +54.33

Results:

Sony: -74.7

Nintendo: +79.29

Microsoft:+57.94

This generation was interesting. There was only a +54 M console increase with the Wii winning out. Sony lost 74.7 M gamers, and 57.9M (Rounded off to 58M and counting) of those went to Microsoft. Microsoft split it almost in half to be exact. There was an generational increase of 54.33M gamers who are unaccounted for so we cannot tell where they came from since the market grew off of Sony's stable growth of the overall console market and the Wii gamers are showing no signs of returning for the Wii U. Why might you ask? Those are not people who regularly game. MS lost the gen, but took a huge chunk out of Sony (which is a huge win for them). Being that the generational change had such results and Sony's loss of 74.7 M still doesn't add up. This proves that Microsoft did not contribute at all to industry growth. They only grew off of the back of Sony. Being that it still doesn't add up if you subtract the generational change by the Wii's growth ( 79.29-54.33) you get 24.96...which is remarkably close to the result of subtracting the Xbox's gains from Nintendo's gains, showing who in fact took the last chunk out of the PS2's marketshare. It was Nintendo.

In the end...it was STILL Microsoft. The crowd they gained isn't loyal either. Sony grew them after decreasing Nintendo's marketshare upon entering the gaming industry and they mostly play third party games.
