Higher resolutions can be useful in certain games where viewing objects over long distances are important. If you can achieve 1080p res whilst keeping frame rate and visual fidelity at acceptable levels then that's preferable to lower native resolutions. Don't see what the problem is with trying to achieve the highest standards possible..
