The problem is that the 3DS offers a cheap alternative to the Wii U.
Their games are too similar, so people get a 3DS to scratch their Nintendo itch and ignore Wii U.

If that is the case, then why isn't the market data supporting it?

Noone can point to any cannibalization between the handhelds and consoles. You people are just applying pseudo-reasoning while ignoring data.

The data does support it; 3DS is cheaper, has similar games, and is selling more.

Occam's Razor: The Wii U is a piece of trash.

Occam's Razor for why Nintendo fanboys don't want to accept this answer: Because they are Nintendo fanboys.

The Wii U and Wii are pretty even in actual game quality at the same respective point in their lifecycles.

The only difference is one doesn't have a successful gimmick tied to it that's bringing in casuals.

That doesn't make one console so much higher quality than the other. The Wii was a re-dressed GameCube with a horribly limited OS, at least the Wii U is some kind of tangiable real upgrade (even if it's still far behind the competetion in many respects) from the previous Nintendo console.
