I'm going to chime in as kekrot did...this simply isn't true.  Their death gets you the XP...but you have to save after.

I've tested this myself. I didn't touch them. I got nothing. I touched them I got it. What is my real NES copy different from the rest?

Strange. It's supposed to appear for a second (the exp number) floating upwards, and when it disappears it should be added to your count. 

Note that the exp isn't added to you until the number disappears. Have you checked that?
