- The Wind Waker HD features 16:9 widescreen and 1080p HD upgrades and support, meaning it can take full advantage of today’s standard in HD TV sets.
- Enhanced lighting: People commonly knock The Wind Waker HD for going a bit heavy on the bloom lighting, but the fact of the matter is that the game features a dramatically improved lighting engine that seems to ditch pre-baked effects for more dynamic lighting and allows for enhanced shadows, including self-shadowing (the ability for moving objects to cast shadows on themselves or other moving objects, as opposed to just on static objects like ground textures).
- Improved draw distance: In the original game, distant objects in the ocean would “pop-in” as you approached, since the whole ocean couldn’t be loaded at once. Now, the draw distance has been dramatically improved, with series producer Eiji Aonuma going on record to say that the entire ocean can be loaded at once, making the ocean world more seamless.
- Remastered music and audio: The music and audio has been remastered, with certain songs using higher-quality samples while others have had reworked instrumentation.
- Off-TV Play: Using the Wii U GamePad, players can play The Wind Waker HD even when they don’t have access to their TV. A quick tap of the – Button will bring the on-screen video onto the GamePad.
- Touch inventory & maps: Zelda games are known for requiring players to interface with their inventory on a regular basis, and like the other touch-capable titles, The Wind Waker HD relegates the player’s inventory to the second screen for easy item management. Players can also display their maps and sea charts on the GamePad during real-time play, allowing them to better coordinate their travels and treasure-hunting.
- Motion-controlled aiming: Just like Ocarina of Time 3D, The Wind Waker HD will allow players to use the GamePad’s built-in gyroscope to aim in first-person using motion gestures for greater precision and more intuitive control.
- Tingle Bottle: A brand-new item in The Wind Waker HD called the Tingle Bottle allows players to leave Miiverse messages around the Great Sea for other players to discover. These messages can range from helpful hints to less-experienced players to fun little notes that direct players toward fantastic viewpoints, awesome sunken treasures, and so on. The Tingle Bottle replaces the Tingle Tuner from the original game.
- Picto-sharing: The game’s Picto Box item has also been integrated into Miiverse. Players can now post their Picto shots onto the web service, and can even have Link take self-photographs using various expressions. The Picto Box has also been expanded to hold up to 12 photos, meaning you can save more of your favorites.
- Multiple ways to play: Apart from the Wii U GamePad, The Wind Waker HD also supports the Wii U Pro Controller, allowing for a more standard control scheme. When playing with the Wii U Pro Controller, players can aim dual-analog style while in first-person.
- Hero Mode: Due to popular demand, Nintendo has elected to include the “Hero Mode” popularized bySkyward Sword in the game. While playing in Hero Mode, enemies will deal twice as much damage and Recovery Hearts will not appear, meaning players will have to rely on Potions and Fairies to restore their life. Hero Mode will be available on the File Select screen from the moment players start the game, without requiring them to clear the game on the standard difficulty first. Hero Mode can also be toggled on and off even in the middle of your file.
- Swift Sail: A new item called the Swift Sail, an upgrade for the standard Sail, can be obtained at the Windfall Island Auction House. The Swift Sail has two effects: it dramatically increases the sailing speed and removes the need to change the direction of the wind to travel. The Swift Sail can be toggled on and off while sailing.
- Streamlined Triforce quest: Due to the often chore-like pace of the Triforce Quest at the end of the game, players will now need to collect and decipher only three Triforce Charts. The remaining five Triforce Shards will be found directly in place of the original charts. In addition, the required Tingle-related event available at the beginning of the game, which is necessary to proceed with the Triforce Quest, will be more directly introduced to the player and cannot be passed over early on.
- Rather than being an equip item, players will now activate the Sail by pressing the B button while on board their ship. The Wind Waker baton, on-ship cannon, and treasure-grabbing crane are also permanently mapped to the D-pad, eliminating the need to manually equip these items to use them.
- Animations for the Grapple Hook – both latching onto a swing point and lowering/raising the crane on the ship – have been greatly reduced to speed up these processes.
- When conducting songs using the Wind Waker, the “playback” for these songs has been slightly sped up. When using the Wind’s Requiem to change the wind, the camera will now pan to show you which objects lie ahead in each cardinal direction. Players can also use the touch screen to conduct with the Wind Waker and rotate the wind direction.
- A targeting reticle has been added to the on-ship cannon to improve accuracy. The reticle also features a guide showing the cannon’s firing arc.
- When gliding with the Deku Leaf, a small translucent green icon is displayed on the ground beneath Link, aiding in precise landings from long drops.
- Players can now move Link freely with the left stick while aiming in first-person. This feature was first introduced in Skyward Sword, and can be used with both gyroscope and dual-analog control in The Wind Waker HD.
- Dialogue text now displays faster, improving the pacing of the game.
- The standard wallet now holds 500 Rupees instead of the original 200.
- Players can now toggle the controls HUD on or off to clear the game screen of clutter.
