Amiibo was never going to be launched in 2013, even if the Wii U was doing well. All Nintendo is has have plans not go the way it did and sadly it performed very poorly. Amiibo will most likely do well because they are extremly popular by the millions of children and adults and Nintendo will make support with a huge library of games. 5 being announced as well as support for 3DS.
It's a bit more than a money maker to me, it's a fantastic idea that just so happens to be one of the most biggest money makers around due to popularity.If it goes well for Nintendo then it's profits all around because they bought on the idea before other console companies do.
