You can't really get lost in EarthBound. It's a sizable game, but the world layout isn't very intricate or confusing (only frustrating part is in Onett when you're wandering around and all the skate punks are stronger than you...).
It's ultimately worth the trip. Just read up a bit on how the battle mechanics all work. So much i didn't know about how to fight in that game until i looked up the easy way to beat Giygas.
