I don't really see how amiibo is aimed at just children. The Smash crowd is pretty old these days, and they said they eventually plan to have an amiibo for every Smash character. That spans a lot of genres and age groups.
Bonus: They claim they can make amiibos of virtually any size they want. If they can shrink it down a little more and make them into keychain/phone accessories they can sell them as functional and fashionable too.
