I gotta disagree on Disney having the most recognizable characters in the West. Mario was more widely recognized than Mickey Mouse over a decade ago, and after the era of Wii/DS with Mario selling over 200 million copies of games with his name headlining, I doubt that's changed. Then there's Pikachu and all of his Pokemon buddies.
The amiibo technology looks superior to the Skylanders tech in every way. Can Skylanders even record data? The amiibo can also be used across multiple titles and genres.
Also, trophy collectors have been asking for Wii U trophies for a while now, and amiibo could be that on steroids.
They look spiffy too lol.
