I'm not saying that you can't get more out of an architecture, I'm just saying that the gains for having a better microarchitecture are minimal compared to chip scaling ... 

Again, I'm not sure that's true. I don't know all of the history, but I'm positive there have been substantial gains in performance with the same process node.
