I finished the long earth today. 9/10.
Can't wait to read the second book. Great ideas, fast paced writing (I read Game of Thrones, dance with dragons before this, what a slog) wonderful imagery. Why can't screenplays be like this. This book could be turned into an awesome series. But 99% chance the '42 minutes with 5 commercial breaks' episode straight jacket would kill it.
The book starts when someone posts instructions online how to make a stepper box out of simple components. With a simple switch people can now travel east or west along a (maybe) infinite series of parallel earths. The story focuses part on exploration of the long earth and on the effects on humanity when suddenly faced with unlimited resources and space. There are some restrictions of course to make it more interesting. Along the way they discover trolls and elves, hominids that have a natural ability to step between worlds. Yet no other human cultures. And something is causing the other hominids to migrate eastwards along the long earth.
