Rebellion – New Aliens vs Predator Game Could Happen, Would Love To Return To This Franchise
A couple of days ago, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kevin Floyer-Lea, Head of Programming at Rebellion. Kevin was the lead programmer on the original PC version of Aliens vs Predator so we couldn’t resist asking him whether Rebellion would return to this franchise. After all, the best version of AVP was developed by this team. Continue reading
Impressions: The Triumphs And Struggles Of Xenonauts
By Adam Smith on July 10th, 2014 at 7:00 pm.
Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to UFO: Enemy Unknown, which means that it’s also a spiritual successor to many of the most tense and glorious hours of my teenage years. Following a successful Kickstarter and a period in Early Access, the game has been available for almost a month now. With its loyal approach to the original design, Xenonauts doesn’t step on XCOM’s toes, but I wondered if it could succesfully muscle in on the original game’s territory. Several days of playing later, I have the answer. And some anecdotes about intra-squad romance.
Unturned: Minecraft Meets DayZ Meets Huge Popularity
By Graham Smith on July 10th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.
In my day, we had to trawl through messageboards – uphill in both directions – to find new games we’d never heard of before. Now it’s possible to occasionally look at Steam’s top ten most played list and find something unfamiliar. That’s what happened today when Craig sent through word of Unturned, a game whose popularity seems almost inevitable: it’s an Early Access free-to-play multiplayer survival game with a blocky artstyle in which you cut down trees and fight the undead.
I’d be cynical about it all if it wasn’t for the trailer below, which reveals that the enemies are cute like Play-Doh and that you can drive a fire truck.
Rampage Knights Is The Binding Of Golden Axe
By Graham Smith on July 10th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.
I have a real soft spot for games in which you thwock enemies and collect gold with friends. They don’t even have to be particularly complex or original; Fighting Force on PlayStation 1 once scratched that itch, and more recently I battled shoddy netcode to play through parts of Hammerwatch.
Rampage Knights therefore looks appealing. It’s “Binding of Isaac + Golden Axe”, according to its developers, and that certainly holds true in the bloodsoaked trailer below.
Crazy (Not) Taxi: Roundabout Out In September
By Nathan Grayson on July 10th, 2014 at 10:00 am.
True fact: the song “Roundabout” by mega-proggers Yes is one of the greatest things. Case in point: here it is making JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure infinity times better. But that’s not actually what we’re here to talk about today. Roundabout: The Game has little (perhaps even nothing) to do with jaunty ’70s rock tunes.
Except that’s not really a problem when it’s just a different kind of great. As John highlighted last year, Roundabout is (round) about navigating a ceaselessly spinning limousine through an open world, a potent metaphor for life if ever there was one. And it has intentionally terrible FMV cut-scenes! September can’t swerve into our lives, wheels all-too-literally painting the town red, soon enough.
