Well as we all know, the great bulk of a video games sales comes from the initial what? 6-8weeks? The more consoles that are out at the release time will give them a better shot at making more money during that time frame. It's no surprise that Square has put quite a heft chunk of money and resources into FF13, so perhaps they just want to maximize what could be slim profits?

Just a shot in the dark...

And yet FFX outsold FFXII? Usually early releases benefit from being one of the few good games on the system at the time. Just look at Resistance. Would've it have sold near as well if it had released alongside Uncharted, CoD4, UT3, etc.?

Well I suppose there could be a saturation point where it doesn't really matter anymore, and other trends take over. Besides, Resistance was released essentially alongs side the PS3. That's a little different than a game being released with so little units out after the initial hype of the console is gone.

Do you really think FF13 will sell better with 10 million PS3's out, rather than 20 million?

It depends on what games are on the system at both points, and it depends on how many people would still be waiting for FFXIII to buy a console at 10 million vs 20 million.

The way I look it is that the ps3 will keep selling no matter what, even more so once FFXIII releases, so even if the install base is 10 million right now (and it will probably be over 20 miillion by the end of this year), the install base will recieve a nice boost upon the game's release, and will continue to grow long after the game is on shelves, with many people picking up the game as they finally pick up ps3s. The game will sell very well, no matter which stage it is released, and it seems like a wasteof money to sit on the game at this point in time (and I don't believe they are donig so).

In the end, this game is a system seller. It's one of the games that makes the ps3 what it is. Compare the ps3 to the Gamecube. Would the GC have reached a 21 million install base without Mario and Zelda? Hell no. Should Nintendo have waited for the GC to reach a 20 million install base before releasing Super Mario Sunshine and the Wind Waker to ensure maximum sales potential? No, because it never would've made it that far. Granted the ps3 is in a slightly different situation because it has many other titles to carry it, but FFXIII is expected to move a lot of consoles, and you can't expect all of these people to adopt before the game comes out.
