Call my a conspiracy theorist. However its a thought worth considering. Perhaps the titles development resources have been scaled back. Square hid none of their dismay last year with the sales of the PS3. They went so far as to criticize Sony for their high price point, and for their poor marketing of the machine. There are valid financial reasons to direct more assets elsewhere.

Square wants to make as much money on their game as possible. They are not developing, producing, and releasing the game merely to sell PS3s for Sony. They want to sell their product first and foremost. This isn't about what is good for Sony or their brand. I know a lot of hot blooded fans have a hard time separating the two.

Square will simply have better sales of the game if they release it only once the PS3 has reached a critical threshold in regards to the user base. Which in Japan is still incredibly small. They may see this, and may have seen it last year. So they possibly cut back the development resources delaying the game for a few years waiting for the console to get on its feet as it were.

The answer to your question is that development is probably crawling along, and they are not as far along as you would think or hope.

This line of reasoning has always irked me. Consoles don't sell without games, so delaying games while waiting for the install base to increase certainly won't do anybody any good. I also can't see publishers sitting on a project far along in development (thus burning cash) just to wait for the install base of the platform to increase, especially when the game in this particular situation is the key title expected to start pushing systems (in Japane especially).

Well as we all know, the great bulk of a video games sales comes from the initial what? 6-8weeks? The more consoles that are out at the release time will give them a better shot at making more money during that time frame. It's no surprise that Square has put quite a heft chunk of money and resources into FF13, so perhaps they just want to maximize what could be slim profits?

Just a shot in the dark...

And yet FFX outsold FFXII? Usually early releases benefit from being one of the few good games on the system at the time. Just look at Resistance. Would've it have sold near as well if it had released alongside Uncharted, CoD4, UT3, etc.?

Well I suppose there could be a saturation point where it doesn't really matter anymore, and other trends take over. Besides, Resistance was released essentially along side the PS3. That's a little different than a game being released with so little units out after the initial hype of the console is gone. Square probably would have released FF13 during the launch window if they could, but now they are forced to take the alternate path.

Do you really think FF13 will sell better with 10 million PS3's out, rather than 20 million?

Also just so we're clear, I'm not exactly supporting this idea. I'm just throwing it out as a possibilty of Square's mindset.

I'm a patient person so none of this truly matters to me.
