What I think is that Nintendo delayed the 3DS vrrsion to make the gap between the 3DS and Wii U versions smaller. I think they probably noticed that a lot of people were disappointed by the dates because the 3DS coming out way earlier and that means SSB4 sales will be lower. But to make up for the delay they are adding new features and modes which I would be fine with if I wanted to get the 3DS version.
IInever really liked Smash until I got a Wii U and saw the directs so it is going to be a day 1 purchase for my Wii U.
