Kinect Sports on XBox One basically did the same thing you're asking for and it's a flop. Mario & Sonic and Wii Party U also have tons of new mini-games ... they're not exactly big successes either. Maybe it's just time to accept that the console motion mini-game craze has just had its day in the sun and that day is now past (just like the craze for guitar/rock perhiperhal games has come and gone). After a while it just gets boring and mining new sports is not easy as there's only maybe 9-12 mainstream sports that everyone understands. No one's dying to play Wii Sports cricket or curling for example. Tennis, golf, and bowling are the three that simply have the widest appeal and are the easiest to understand. I think the motion controller may have a revival in a couple of years if VR takes off, because you kinda need a motion controller for that, but otherwise I think the "Wii" concept of Wii Sports/Fit has run its course. |
Some of the "hardcore" actually do like motion controlled gaming though and quite enjoy these mini game collections as multiplayer experiences. but they just keep dumbing them down in an attempt to hold onto the "casuals"
The first mario and sonic game was the most hardcore and they simplified them in the sequels instead of making the games deeper. Same goes for wii party, the mini games just seem so simple in comparison to mario party, to a point where it is more luck than skill to win. Simple is great for the casuals when they started, but even they mustve gotten bored by how dumbed down the mini games came to be. Surely after their first taste a sequel with deeper gameplay is ore likely to keep a hold of them instead of boring them. Nintendo really don't understand that though..
