I never liked the game either. I gave it a fair run, actually played it on PS3, 360 and PC on the back of heaped critical praise and enthusiastic gamer opinions on forums, but I never managed to finish it. While the setting and characters were totally unique, it didn't stop the game from being fundamentally boring and not scary.
Also, the so called emotional dilemma of choosing to harvest or set free? Please, you would need to add far more depth to a character for even a flicker of hesitation to enter my mind.
