I honestly believe gaming PCs are becoming niche market

Also,  if your 2010 built rig cant handle current games unless you crank the settings to low for it to run,  i put it to you that your rig wasnt high end when you built it anyway.

Nah. It's i7 running 3.2GHz and I have 5800 series ATI. CPU was over $300 and GPU was over $200 when I purchased it from Newegg.

Unless you've got <4GB of RAM or are running dual monitors/ higher than 1080P resolution, you should have no trouble equalling the current gen consoles.
