For me personally, the only thing the 3DS can benefit from is a higher DPI (and only for the XL, really, 2DS and 3DS original look fine.) Otherwise, it is perfect as far as specifications vs. development costs go. Handheld games are suppose to be cheaper than console releases, while still remaining up to date. The 3DS is a slightly more versatile WIi as far as performance goes, and that is alright because it allows for cheaper development costs, faster development times, and overall more high quality releases. If you notice, the best looking VIta games in comparison, are more home console oriented games (or console ports), and the handheld oriented games could very well be done on the 3DS. So more powerful hardware than what is necessary can actually be a detriment for handhelds.
