I don't think they'll do. Sony would need to reinvent the system and turn it into something never seen before. Example. Nintendo sold few Gamecubes against the similar sales of the Xbox and the massive PS2. If they had released, instead of the Wii, the Gamecube 2 with specs similar or superior of those of PS360, it wouldn't have sold that much.
We can see that in the performance of the WiiU and the XBone (there are a lot of reasons for the performance of those machines). The tablet controller of the WiiU and the TV features of the XBone weren't enough to diferentiate themselves, and in a market with similar products, people will go to the most attractive (PS4 will have more games than the WiiU and it has more power than the XBone) of the bunch.
I think Sony should make the Vita lifespam as long as possible. That helped the GameBoy and the PS2.
