There isn't really a way to improve SMG, its one of the best games of all time. Maybe fewer swimming levels? When you have already saved the princess (I don't think that's a spoiler.. everyone has played a Mario game before) mailtoad doesn't need to say "Even when she's kidnapped, the princess is so thoughtful."
