The point of religion wasn't for the theism and mythologies. It was a way to help keep the community together. However, nowadays, people have been using religion for other purposes, often unethical and the opposite of community building. It is the abuse of religious power that has prompted the aforementioned question from the OP. I don't have a problem with religion as long it is not forced upon the people. The problem with religion in the US is that it is.

I'm not sure how you came to those conclusions.

In my life, my church community gives me hope and brings me closer to all people. If some people are using religion for wrong purposes, it does not make religion bad. It makes their use bad.

Again, is a knife in itself a bad thing if one uses it for murder?

That's the thing. Your, but yours isn't all the religions and the religious institutions. Also, what kind of hope does your church brings? The hope for Heaven? The hope for a good, fulfilling life? If it's the former, then that's false hope because the concept of Heaven arised from the fear of death. The latter, I have no problems with whatsoever since it's a universal desire people have.
