Of course, they're still a business and as such they need profits, they can't just do whatever they want.
I do feel, though, that Aonuma likes to make each new game a very unique experience and the artstyle is one of the main factors behind this. He doesn't want to make a game that will have massive Western appeal, he just wants to make a really good, special game. When he talks about Twilight Princess, this is made very clear.

You are correct...and that's exactly the reason why Aonuma has to go (among many other things).

Zelda was originally made as western fantasy, and between 50-60% of sales (on home consoles) comes from NA alone - not paying enough attention to what that audience wants is sign of his (and current Nintendo's along with him) arrogance and vanity.
