Quick example would be Elder Scrolls. Morrowind, when I played it, felt like a completely new world. The creatures, transportation, plants, night sky, EVERYTHING felt alien. That game totally sucked me in. Then Oblivion and Skyrim, might of well been Kentucky and Alaska. Running around with deer and butterflies felt generic medieval fantasy and bland. Even the knights had generic brit accents.
I guess that's my thing. Games don't feel as 'foreign' as they used to and lack imagination. I will admit, theres a few exceptions, but not many.

Imagination : putting non human stuff. You can put on a classic gameplay and cliché story, if they are elves and vampires, it means you have a great imagination.
