How would that be the case? Iwata was hired as the CEO in the GameCube days before the DS or Wii were even announced. He was a major part of the reason why DS and Wii were created. He just decided to stop reading his Blue Ocean Strategy book and decided to be stupid this generation. You could even say he was overly confident considering the starting price of both the 3DS and Wii U.
