True, but that ending is series canon. And some of the alternate endings are even more messed up!

Yeah, it's a gut puncher for sure. Brilliant, but devastating. There is one ending (just one out of the six you can get) that is happy, so at least there's that as consolation, even though you know the truth is sadness. :(
