Besides, a lot of things in the Zelda trailer looked realistic, like the grass, shadows, lighting and the trees/foliage. Only the characters are clearly non-realistic.

I posted the definition of cartoon. Take it as you will. But what you descrive as japanese cartoon (in fact, as cartoon in general, seeing that you make no distinctions between any of the different animation works), would fit under kodomo (your regular saturday morning animation), in Japan. Then you'd have other types of anime targetted at other types of audience (shounen, shojo, ecchi or even hentai).

But for you, animated drawings = cartoons. Gotcha.
